碳化硅按颜色分为黑碳化硅和绿碳化硅两大类。
①黑碳化硅含SiC约98%，其韧性高于绿碳化硅，大多用于加工抗张强度低的材料，如玻璃、陶瓷、石材、耐火材料、铸铁和有色金属等。
②绿碳化硅含SiC99%以上，自锐性好，大多用于加工硬质合金、钛合金和光学玻璃，也用于珩磨汽缸套和精磨高速钢刀具。此外还有立方碳化硅，它是以特殊工艺制取的黄绿色晶体，用以制作的磨具适于轴承的超精加工，可使表面粗糙度从Ra32～0.16微米一次加工到Ra0.04～0.02微米。

♦ 磨料用途
碳化硅具有很高的硬度，化学稳定性和一定的韧性，所以碳化硅能用于制造固结磨具、涂附磨具和自由研磨，从而来加工玻璃、陶瓷、石材、铸铁及某些非铁金属、硬质合金、钛合金、高速钢刀具和砂轮等。
♦ 耐火材料和耐腐蚀材料
碳化硅具有高熔点（分解温度）、化学惰性和抗热振性，所以碳化硅能用于磨具、陶瓷制品烧成窑炉中用的棚板和匣钵、炼锌工业竖缸蒸馏炉用的碳化硅砖、铝电解槽衬、坩锅、小件炉材等多种碳化硅陶瓷制品。
♦ 化工用途
碳化硅可在溶融钢水中分解并和钢水中的游离氧、金属氧化物反应生成一氧化碳和含硅炉渣。所以它可作为冶炼钢铁的净化剂，即用作炼钢的脱氧剂和铸铁组织改良剂。
♦ 电工用途
用作加热元件、非线性电阻元件和高温半导体材料。加热元件如硅碳棒（适用于1100～1500℃工作的各种电炉），非线性电阻元件，各式的避雷阀片。
运输与装卸：在运输过程中，不得用铁钩拖拽，应防止与坚硬物质混装，不可强烈振动、磨擦、踩、 砸，严禁抛掷，应轻装轻卸，以减少包装破碎，影响使用。
储存：应储存于阴凉干燥处，防止内外包装袋破裂，防止受潮和吸附空气中其它物质，影响使用效果。严禁与有毒有害气体或易挥发物质混放，存放要远离污染源。

♦ The use of abrasive

♦ The refractory material and corrosion resistant materials
Silicon carbide has high melting point (decomposition temperature), chemical inertness and thermal shock resistance. Therefore, silicon carbide can used in abrasive, ceramic firing kiln roof and sagger, zinc smelting industry vertical cylinder distillation furnace for silicon carbide, aluminum electrolytic tank lining, crucible, small furnace material silicon carbide ceramic products.
♦ The use of chemical
Silicon carbide can decompose and react with free oxygen and metal oxide in molten steel to produce carbon monoxide and silicon containing slag. So it can be used as a purifying agent for smelting iron and steel, which is used as a steel smelting agent and a cast iron tissue conditioner.
♦ The use of electrical
Used as a heating element, a nonlinear resistive element, and a high temperature semiconductor material. Heating elements, such as silicon carbide (applicable to 1100 to 1500 degrees C operation of various kinds of electric furnace), nonlinear resistance components, all kinds of arrester valve.
Transport and handling: in the transport process, not drag hook, should prevent mixed with the solid material, strong vibration, friction, hit, hit, forbid throwing should be lightly armed light discharge, to reduce the breakage of packing, the impact of the use.
Storage: should be stored in a cool and dry place, to prevent internal and external packaging bag break, prevent moisture and adsorption of other substances in the air, affect the use effect.
